Greater Spotted Ceilidh for MAP 16th May ’26

May 17, 2026 By Jane Lewis Leave a Comment

We were delighted to be asked to sing at the Greater Spotted Ceilidh in Portobello Town Hall to raise funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians

Here is a video of our moving collaboration with Nada Shawa, Palestinian dancer and poet, and Gica Loening, fiddle player. The song is the traditional Palestinian lullaby Yumma Mwhale el Hawa. A re-worked version of this song by Together for Palestine was a strong contender for the Xmas No. 1 spot in December 2025. Money from purchases of the single went to Choose Love, a charity supporting Palestinian-led organisations Taawon, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and Palestine Medical Relief Service.

Each Child a Light exhibition launch 9th May 2026

May 12, 2026 By Jane Lewis Leave a Comment

We sang Yumma Mwhale el Hawa, a Palestinian lullaby at the launch of the Each Child a Light exhibition at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh. This is a particpatory project to create quilts made up of embroidered squares, each of which commemorates a child killed in Gaza. It was an incredibly moving and heart-wrenching event. So important that we allow ourselves to feel the grief and don’t turn away.

Day of Song March 21st 2026

April 3, 2026 By Jane Lewis Leave a Comment

Over 40 people joined us for our second Day of Song on a sunny spring equinox day in March. It was lovely to make connections between people who sang with us years ago and those relatively new to the choir.

Thanks to Jon Davey for these lovely photos.

Weave the Willow at Art Walk Porty 14th Sept 2025

October 7, 2025 By Jane Lewis Leave a Comment

As part of Art Walk Porty we sang Weave the Willow at Anna’s basketmaking studio open house on Sept 14th and taught the song to everyone there. It was lovely singing to the willow and taking in all the smells of the workshop. Anna explained all the basketry terms in the song with visual cues.

10th Anniversary Day of Song Sat 23rd March 2024

April 22, 2024 By Jane Lewis Leave a Comment

We celebrated 10 years of Portobello Community Choir with a free Day of Song attended by a wonderful range of singers – those who have sung with us right from the start; newer members and some people who had never sung with us before! We were delighted that Chandra Mather joined Jane to lead the singing – Jane and Chandra set up the choir together in 2014.

Many thanks to Jon Davey for these lovely photos.

Sea Songs 16th August 2023 Portobello Beach

August 25, 2023 By Jane Lewis Leave a Comment

We were delighted to be joined by workers from Edinburgh Shoreline who told us about the Restoration Forth project which is reintroducing Oysters and Seagrass into the Forth. We sang Jane’s new Dabberlocks Kelp song, written as part of the Edinburgh Shoreline 100 Species Project, and Penny Stone’s Oyster Catcher song – another of the birds on the 100 species list. We also heard from Jenny Pope about her Buoyancy in Unprecedented Times Art Walk Porty residency and sang two songs that will be included in the coracle launching ceremony on September 10th. Many thanks for Jon Davey for these fabulous photos.
